Dirt Crew Interview: Break 3000 [English /

Tell us a bit about yourself and Dirt Crew.

Break 3000 (Peter Gijselaers)

I started DJing in a small bar in my hometown Maastricht around 1991-1992. I also produced my first music together with a friend around that time. My first record is from 1992 as “Amazone”. After that I started doing music as “Break 3000” – mostly trip hop, electro and drum n bass (that’s where the name came from).
So the first Break 3000 things were released in 1999-2000. After doing a lot of electro it slowly changed into more old school house. In 2003 I started Dirt Crew together with James Flavour from Berlin. Since than I have been building up the label, nowadays I only concentrate on the label and my artist.

Your record label is almost ten years old now. How is everything going for Dirt Crew Recordings?

It’s going really well! We always kept true to our own sound and now that’s paying off with the current return of good deep house, we manage to get over the very boring minimal and loopy tech house years pretty well and I am happy that people are more into the true house sound again. So with new artists like Detroit Swindle, Urulu & Steve Huerta, Ben La Desh and soon Waze & Odyssey we will have a killer year in 2013. Furthermore I am planning the first real Tigerskin album and the debut album by Detroit Swindle.

Have you been to Hong Kong or Asia before? Did your Dirt Crew partner, James Flavour, mention anything about DJing in Hong Kong last year?

I have never been to Hong Kong and I’m really looking forward to visit! I have been playing in Asia before, last time I was in Shanghai which was a great experience too! I have also been to Japan twice on tour. It is great to discover a new side of Asia and especially Hong Kong! James Flavour also had a great time, so I am excited!

You vs. James Flavour, who would win in a pillow fight?

Me of course… haha…

Wild Renate

Do you notice any new developments with the music and DJs in Berlin?

Like I said, finally some people are returning to the true house sound. We had some really difficult years in Berlin with only shitty minimal stuff going on, but now you have great clubs that play great music. My favorite club is Wilde Renate, that place is just the perfect club!

What was the first record you bought?

I am not sure what was the first one, but I think it was “The House of God” by D.H.S., or “Total Confusion” by A Homeboy, A Hippie and A Funky Dread, back in 1990. That’s for the dance music. As far as my very first record, that was in the 80’s and must have been something by Duran Duran or Beastie Boys… or Madonna?? haha…

How about the most recent record you bought?

As I don’t buy vinyl anymore, I just can tell you what is my favorite record right now. That’s the latest Roberto Rodriguez on Freerange Records. [listen below]

You’re in the middle of a long DJ set when suddenly you need to go to the toilet. What long song will you play to keep everyone dancing until you come back?

Mike Dunn – “Phreaky MF”. That’s 10 minutes and will keep people busy for sure! 😉

Dirt Crew

由 Electro 慢慢演變成 old school house.

Dirt Crew Recordings?

Haha

D.H.S. – “The House of God” or A Homeboy or A Hippie and A Funky Dread – “Total Confusion” 1990.
Duran Duran or Beastie boys… or Madonna 有關 ?? haha..
Roberto Rodriguez – “Dance Like Nobody’s Watching” (Freerange Records).

Mike Dunn – “Phreaky MF” – 10 mins,

In the 9 years since the Dirt Crew’s inception they have mastered the art of mixing old school house, new school deep house and minimal funky techno… and then some! Along the way they’ve succeeded in unleashing a flurry of floor stompers that have got people preaching the good news in every town they touch down in.

The “Crew” are well known for an eclectic taste in vinyl material that can only come from true and honest propensity to party. They’ll often throw down sadly forgotten 80’s acid cuts and chuck some old-skool breakbeats on top, just for good measure. They seamlessly weave these elements into their signature sexy, dance floor friendly, beats with an electro-esque pulse that’s sure to keep the heat rising. They keep Deep House alive… no compromises made!

Humdrum and Midnight & Co. are proud to welcome Peter Gyselaers (the Dutch half of Berlin’s Dirt Crew) to Hong Kong’s glowing club scene.

PeterGijselaers

Peter Gijselaers started his music career as bass player in the indie/dance outfit ‘Swains‘ in 1989, then soon got involved in house and techno production for the Belgian ‘KK’ label. Between ’90 and ’94 he released several records as ‘Amazone‘ on ‘Nova Zembla Records ‘. His DJ career started in ’90 when he began spinning after shows of the ‘Swains’ , in this period he already played in lots of clubs across Europe.

From ’99 on his music production took priority and he released his first 12” on his own label ‘Casanova‘. In 2001 the launch of the ‘Meuse muzique’ label saw him as producer take another direction , with his electro/techno tracks he got recognition by DJ’s like The Hacker, Mick Wills, Dr. Lektroluv and Tiga who included the track ‘Sacrifice‘ on his ‘DJ Kicks‘ compilation out on ‘!K7‘.

In 2005 his release on MBF called ‘Flash’ stormed the charts across Europe within two weeks after its release. In the years since, Peter and James Flavour have been releasing music together as Dirt Crew on top record labels like Gomma, 2020 Vision, Freerange, Breastfed, Soma, and Crosstown Rebels. Since the 2004 launch of their label Dirt Crew Recordings, they’ve hosted an impressive discography with artists like Tigerskin, Adultnapper, Ben La Desh, Till Von Sein, Mano Le Tough and Detroit Swindle.

It’s clear then that the Dirt Crew are tastemakers and world class DJs not to be missed! Be ready this March 16th for Break 3000’s journey into deep dirty house at Midnight & Co.!
